Thai Port: Club History & Honours

Thai Port Football Club, formerly known as Port Authority of Thailand Football Club was founded in 1967 by Major Prachuap Suntranakul, who was the director of the Thai Port Authority at the time. He took on the role of chairman of Port Authority of Thailand F.C and was instrumental in helping the club during its initial years.

In 1968, Port were crowned Kor Royal Cup winners, which sparked the most successful era in the clubs history as they went on to win 6 Kor Royal Cup titles between 1968 and 1979. Port also had plenty of success in the Queen's Cup, winning it 4 times in succession from 1977 to 1980. Following the 1980 Queen's Cup win, the club won 4 trophies in 13 years, but then faced a spell of 16 trophyless years.

That barren run came to an end in 2009 when Sasom Pobpraserd's side defeated BEC Tero to win the Thaicom FA Cup. Port won the game 5-4 on penalties at Suphachalasai Stadium, following a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes of football.

Thai Port represented Thailand in the 2010 AFC Cup, qualifying easily from the group stage of the tournament. Port took on Sriwijaya from Indonesia in the last 16 and thrashed them 4-1. The Thai side eventually succumbed at the Quarter-Final stage, losing 3-0 on aggregate to Kuwaiti side Al-Qadsia.

Port made it two domestic trophies in two seasons when they won the 2010 Toyota League Cup against Buriram PEA at Suphachalasai Stadium. Worawut Wangsawad and Jirawat Makarom were on target for Port, securing 5,000,000 baht in prize money for the club and the chance to play against a J-League 2 team in the 2010/11 Toyota Premier Cup.

The 2011 campaign started well enough for Thai Port. The Klong Toey based team beat J-League side Shonan Bellmare at Suphachalasai Stadium to win the 2010/11 Toyota Premier Cup. The club were awarded 500,000 baht in prize money.

The early season optimism wasn't to last long, though, as the club were hit by severe financial problems in April, which resulted in manager Sasom Pobpraserd, several members of staff, plus four of our best players being sold to Buriram FC for an estimated fee of 20,000,000 baht.

Thongchai Sukkokee was given the task of managing the team for the remainder of the season, and he did a decent job, given the circumstances. Thai Port finished a respectable seventh in the TPL table, and battled their way to a second successive Toyota League Final. Port put up a valiant display at Suphachalasai against TPL and FA Cup holders Buriram PEA, but the north-east side emerged victorious, winning 2-0.
