Sompong gets life ban?

Ex-Thai Port striker Sompong Soleb has, according to the Bangkok Post, been given a lifetime ban from the Thai national team after being found guilty of drink-driving. The 25-year-old Buriram FC player was also handed a one-month suspended jail sentence, and a 5,000 baht fine by a Samut Prakan court.

UPDATE: Today's Post carries a follow-up story about Sompong. No mention of a lifetime ban, just that Schafer won't select him ever again. Looks like I was right to put a question mark in the title!

  1. He obviously didn't have the customary B200 on him to make the officer look the other way!?

  2. Also, who wants a bet with me that he doesn't play for the next three or so games, by then (as if in a case a sudden national amnesia) everyone will have forgotten about it, he'll be selected in the team and nobody will bat an eye lid.

Or has five years in Thailand made me cynical?

    1. I'm not convinced that it is a lifetime ban. I can well believe that Winnie Schafer will never select him again, but once he's gone, all bets are off.

Shame the English FA dont follow the FAT's lead, then we might actually have an England team that wasn't full of complete arseholes.

On a different note completely but important I think, if I have understood correctly from the Thaileaguefootball website that most teams have agreed the 3+1 match day squad and the more dramatically 5 foreigner in the squad.

With Fab's signing, Moise, Munze, Mario, Jacob, Robb, Dong and Ba-wi, who's going to go? I'd rather we'd hadnt signed a past it striker who's probably on big wages. With Todsapol developing Mario can be let go, please dear God let Bawi go (again probably on big wages and rubbish)Jacob if played in the right position can be an asset but not up front. Dong's got potential and Robb if trusted can certainly provide creativity, so how will the squad adapt to the new rules, obviously if I have them right that is

    1. A past it striker? A bit harsh I think - I reckon the guy could do a job for us, he knows where the net is after all, which makes him immediately more qualified than anyone else in this team. Agreed tho, it's bad timing that days later this rule has emerged.

The 5 foreigners in the squad is a bit pointless really, if you can only play 3 (or 4) not many teams will have expensive foreigners as back up or bench warmers, nor would many foreigners stand for it - so whoever you do have need to be guaranteed first teamers.

With this in mind, you gotta be ruthless with our squad at the mo! Moise should not be let go under any circumstance. Fab has just signed, so presume he's in. Munze has saved us on many occasion and would potentially be the hardest to replace, so gotta keep him. And there's your 3 man, match day foreigners. Throw in Dong in as your token Asian (although I wouldn't be totally adverse to loosing him if some wazzo amazing Asian wanted to sign).

Suppose Robb could stay as a back up, but then could only get on the pitch if we dropped one of the above, so could become more of a hindrance than a help! Jacob just hasn't done enough for me and has to move aside for others. Ba Wi, well, say no more. That just leaves Mario, unfortunately not good enough to make the 3 best foreigners that we have, yet also too good to be a reserve / bench warmer.

      Interesting times ahead.

  4. I had exactly the same thought regarding England. About 50-60 players would be ruled out immediately!

On the foreigners rule, nothing is official yet, although it's looking like it will go down to 5 (3+1). I think Dong will be out of the picture...he only signed a 6 month deal. Jacob? Hardly played in the second half of the season. Hasn't scored since March. Wouldn't surprise me if he moved on. All the others are signed up for at least one year, so we could be stuck with a surplus of foreign players. The +1 will mean that Ba-Wi plays every week! (as alaways)

  5. Anyone that drives drunk in BKK is an idiot. Way to many taxis to ever chance it.
As far as the foreign players on the squad. Think we can release Mario who has been suspect at best since returning from injury. Would love to see Bawi leave and Dong return, but I am afraid it will be the other way around.
3 + 1 really will be a pain. Now I know why Army signed Sarayuth!

    1. Sneaking out of the National team training camp, Drink driving and fleeing the cops...he's clearly not the brightest!

I agree...the 3+1 thing will not be good for us at all. The quality of the Thai players in our squad is quite weak (bar 3 or 4 players). That is something that needs to change next season if we don't want to be involved in a relegation battle.

"fleeing the cops" that's just bizarre, admittedly if your some one with some type of profile in your country you don't want to get caught by the police, by fleeing from them, sweet jesus! any more details about this you can give us?

    1. From the BP: "Sompong, a forward for First Division champions Buriram FC, was arrested near Suvarnabhumi airport early yesterday. He had run away from his car after it collided with another vehicle before officers at Suvarnabhumi police station discovered that he was drunk."

"Fleeing the cops" might be a slight exaggeration. "Leaving the scene of a crime" didn't have the same ring to it lol.
