Port set to wrap up Ruella deal

After several weeks of procrastination, Thai Port have announced that Alex Ruella Da Costa, 25, will sign for the club tomorrow. The former Corinthians, Guarani and Siam Navy midfielder/striker will become Port's fourth pre-season signing, following the arrivals of Olof Hviden-Watson, Whoo Hyun and Pongpipat Kamnuan.

UPDATE: Thai Port have also completed the signing of Narat Munin-noppamart from Chiang Rai United. The 33-year-old defender has also had spells with Osotspa, Bangkok Bank and BEC Tero.

Thai Port's 2012 TPL Fixtures

* ALL FIXTURES ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE

New Thai Port shirt

Here is a photo of Thai Port's 2012 home shirt. The kit is made by Thai manufacturer FBT and will (by all accounts) be available to buy in mid-March. You can see more pictures of a rather large version of the shirt here. To see some excellent photos from the 2012 Thai Football Expo, click here.

New investment on the horizon?

Thai PBS News are reporting that Bangkok Thonburi University President Chanchai Chairungrueng is hoping to buy a multi-million baht stake in Thai Port FC. Negotiations are expected to last about two weeks, with an initial investment figure of 20,000,000 baht mentioned in the report.

Given the increasing influence of politicians in Thai football, you won't be surprised to learn that Chanchai has political connections. He's the former party leader of the Puea Phandin Party, and he also took on the role of Industry Minister during Abhisit Vejjajiva's tenure as Prime Minister.

Friendly: Bangkok Glass 2 - 1 Thai Port

A Thai Port XI lost 2-1 to Bangkok Glass at LEO Stadium earlier today. Pongpipat Kamnuan scored a 20-yard free kick to give Port the lead, but BG hit back with second half goals from Samuel Ajayi and Peerapong Pichitchotirat to secure the victory.

The Port team had something of a retro feel to it. The returning Pongpipat played alongside PAT stalwarts Kay Langkawong, Kiatjareon Ruangparn, Ittipol Nonsiri, Teerawut Sanphan and Olan Limsumpansanthi. The latter two haven't made a competitive appearance for the club since the 2009 FA Cup Final, in which they both scored during the penalty shootout.

Recent signings Olof Hviden-Watson and Whoo Hyun also took part in the game, along with the likes of Ekkapoom Potharungroj, Wanlop Sae-Jiu and Sivakorn Chakuprasat, plus a few trialists. One of them, Bruno, was praised by Jedsada Na Phattalung during a post match interview. I hope he's a striker! (update - he is)

There are a few match photos here. I think Bruno is the geezer with his sleeves rolled up.

New Signing? Whoo hoo!

Thai Port are set to complete the signing of Whoo Hyun. The South Korean central defender will officially pen a two-year deal tomorrow. The 25-year-old has spent the last two seasons with Police United, where he established himself as a first-team regular.

Whoo will become the fifth foreign player on Thai Port's books - along with Mario Cesar Da Silva, Steven Robb, Olof Hviden-Watson and Kim Ba-We. The Alex Ruella deal is yet to be finalised, despite reports to the contrary. This TLO article also states that Munze Ulrich will definitely not be signing a new deal at PAT Stadium. It looks like Wanlop Sae-Jiu will be given the chance to shine!

Thai Football Expo 2012

The Thai Football Expo returns next week to Central World Plaza, Bangkok. The trade fair will take place over 3 days from 24th-26th of February. All TPL and Division 1 clubs should be represented at the event. What will they be selling at the Thai Port booth? Plenty of stuff from last season, I'm guessing. Slick marketing has never been our strong point!

As well as the club booths, there should be plenty of players, both past and present, doing 'meet-and-greets', plus Thai football memorabilia, and the inevitable plethora of promo girls hanging around, looking bored. If that doesn't sell it to you, I don't know what will!

Yet Another U-Turn (Part 2)

It's a definitely a day for u-turns at PAT Stadium! First came the news about the club abandoning plans for a new team name and logo. Next, TLO claim that Munze Ulrich has had a change of heart and now wants to sign a new deal with Port. Whether an offer is still on the table remains to be seen.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper left the club by mutual consent earlier this month, and was rumoured to be a transfer target for Bangkok United. The Bangkok Angels, however, have snapped up French keeper Antonin Trilles from S-League side Etoile FC, ending any possibility of Munze being reunited with ex-Port boss Sasom Pobprasert.

* The footnote to the TLO article suggests that former Port player Pongpipat Kamnuan is likely to return to PAT Stadium, although Police United are also tracking the player.

Yet Another U-Turn (Part 1)

Port FC is dead, long live Thai Port! The club have released a brief statement on the old (or should that be current?) website saying that we will play under the name Thai Port FC during the 2012 season. That means the Port FC name and logo have been scrapped completely. Good news!

It's not the first time that Port have made an embarrassing u-turn in the recent past. Ex-Vice President Pichet Mankong was forced to scrap plans to change the clubs nickname to FB Battery Singhjaotha at the behest of Port supporters.

MTU cement a deal for Port duo?

Whilst there is still no official confirmation that Mongkol Namnuad and Todaspol Lated have signed for SCG Muangthong United, the photograph below, of the lads training with the MTU squad, is evidence enough for me.

Elsewhere, the recent speculation linking Ekkapoom Potharungroj with a move to either Muangthong or BEC Tero seems to have cooled. The boy wonder was training at PAT Stadium earlier in the week, and even had a go at being the linesman during a friendly match. Don't give up the day job though, Bon!

The Ultimate Warrior

TLO are reporting that Suphanburi FC have signed ex-Thai Port player Moudourou Swa-Moise on a two-year deal. The article states that Suphan head coach Worawut Srimaka thwarted Bangkok United's attempts to sign the Cameroonian defender by offering him a very lucrative deal.

The Warriors, owned by the Silpa-Archa family, have snapped up 14 new players so far this year, including Worawut Wangsawad (Port), Pipat Tonkanya (Osotspa) and Siwamet Tanusorn (Army United). Expect them to be in the promotion shake-up come the end of the season!

UPDATE: It's now official - see below. The other bloke in the photo is former Thai Port and Raj Pracha General Manager Adebayo Gbadebo. He has clearly taken on a similar role at Suphanburi.

Pre-season plans

Thai Port have announced that they will travel to Chiang Mai as part of their preparation for the new season. The trip will last 10 days, starting on March 1st. As well as some 'hard yakka' on the training pitch, Port will play friendly games against TTM Chiang Mai and Lamphun Warriors.

Before all that, though, we will take on Bangkok Glass at LEO Stadium on Wednesday 22nd February (5:00pm kick off) and Air Force United (away) on Friday 24th February (5:00pm kick-). We also played a Muangthong United XI this afternoon. I think the game ended 1-1. Olof Hviden-Watson scored Port's goal from the spot.

Port old boy set to return?

Ex-Thai Port left-back Pongpipat Kamnuan is being strongly linked with a move to PAT Stadium. The 28-year-old Port Authority of Thailand employee has reportedly been training with the club, with a view to rejoining in the near future. Port fans have already given him a warm 'welcome back' on facebook.

'M' spent the 2011 season at Samat Songkhram after several years as a Port player - including a successful stint with Port Authority's futsal team. During that time, he was part of the Thailand national team squad that won the 2003 ASEAN Futsal Championship in Kuantan, Malaysia.

Pongpipat's has also tasted glory with Port in the eleven-a-side game. He played all 120 minutes of the 2009 FA Cup Final against BEC Tero, although he wasn't needed for the penalty shootout (which we won 5-4). Furthermore, he started 7 out of 11 fixtures during our victorious League Cup run in 2010, but missed the final vs Buriram PEA due to suspension.

Pre-season opener: Port vs MTU

The end of season break didn't last long, did it?! Thai Port begin their 2012 pre-season campaign tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday), when they host Muangthong United at PAT Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00pm (I think).

New signing Olof Hviden-Watson is set to feature. Whether his former Navy team-mate, Alex Ruella is involved remains to be seen. Port will be without some of the players that took part in the Toyota Cup Final, including Steven Robb, Kim Ba-We and Mario Cesar Da Silva. They are all on vacation.

Incidentally, I wonder if Mongkol Namnuad and Todsapol Lated will be playing? If so, who for?

New badge designs

Click here to see some of the entries to Thai Port's badge design competition. I'm not keen on most of them. Maybe I should have entered my tongue-in-cheek creation after all!

Iron Bulls sign Port's forgotten man

Santhipap Siri's blink-and-you'll-miss-it stint at Thai Port is over. The 26-year-old has joined Bangkok FC on a free transfer. In departing, he becomes the tenth player to have left PAT Stadium since the season ended.

The ex-TOT player signed for Port during the 2011 mid-term break, but was struck down by a virus shortly afterwards. He fought his way back to full fitness towards the end of the campaign, and finally made his debut for the club in a 3-1 home defeat against Sri Racha. The hapless midfielder was substituted in the 42nd minute, never to be seen again.

New kits on the block

Speaking of competitions, Thai Port have finally got around to announcing the result of the 2012 kit design contest, a mere 5 weeks after the closing date! The winning designs can be seen below.

More badges than a boy scout

It appears that Thai Port's latest club badge lasted just one game! The ship/lion combo worn on the players shirts during the Toyota League Cup Final has proved to be rather unpopular with certain sections of the Khlong Toey Army. So much so, that the club have asked fans to design a new logo for the 2012 season. You better do it quick, though! The closing date is February 12th - details here.

Given that Thai clubs have a penchant for imitating other teams badges, I reckon my tongue-in-cheek design is a winner!

Super Rich get green light from PAT

Following a 3-hour meeting with Port Authority executives, Thai Port Vice President Worapong Tantivejchayanon told journalists that Super Rich have been given the go-ahead to run the team for the 2012 season.

'Big Ben' went on to say that 28,000,000 baht has already been set aside for the new campaign, although 50,000,000 baht will be needed to fund the team until the end of the year. He plans to make up the shortfall will extra funding from PAT, plus sponsorship money.

The long standing floodlight issue was also raised at the meeting. For the umpteenth time, it was stated that the lighting will be brought up to TPL standards, so that Port home games can kick-off at 6:00pm. Believe it when you see it!

Double Navy swoop

Club Director Denphong Pongyaat has told MGR Sport that Thai Port are close to signing Alex Ruella from Siam Navy. The 25-year-old Brazilian attacking midfielder/forward would be a very welcome addition to the squad! He was named as one of TLO's top 10 signings of the season, despite plying his trade for one of the relegated sides. His team-mate at Navy, Olof Hviden-Watson, has already signed a two-year deal with Port.

Denphong also revealed that Port ended their pursuit of Ney Fabiano due to his high wage demands. It is believed that the player has now signed for Songkhla FC or Wuachon United (don't ask).

Wisarut Wai-Ngan has been released from his contract with Thai Port. The 20-year-old ex-Osotspa defender is set to sign for Division One side Nakhon Ratchasima FC. The future of Ekkapoom Potharungroj (pictured below) is still undecided. If I was a betting man, I'd have £10 on him starting the season at Muangthong United.

UPDATE! TLO have confirmed the news about Piyakul Kaewnamkang AKA 'coach Um' taking over as head coach. Thongchai, it seems, will be moving 'upstairs'. Siamsport have also picked up on the story.

New season, new head coach?

Will Thai Port have a new head coach for the 2012 season? Quite possibly, is the answer. True Sport News and Sport Radio 96 are linking AFC A-Licence coach Piyakul Kaewnamkang (pictured below) with the position currently held by Thongchai Sukkokee. If Piyakul is handed the job, it is likely that Thongchai will be assigned the role of Assistant Director.

Copycats?

Thai Port forum member thaiportfcgogogo has pointed out the glaring similarity between the lion on Port FC's new club crest and that of Point Loma Nazarene University Sea Lions. I'm sure it's a complete coincidence! Incidentally, there is an interesting thread on thailandsusu, showing several examples of Thai club badges being similar to those of other teams.

Port get cash injection from PAT

Worapong Tantivejchayanon AKA 'Big Ben' has told MGR Sport that Port Authority have pumped 10 million baht into the club, with 10-15 million more to follow this week. The initial cash injection was presumably used to pay overdue salaries and bonuses. As the for the second lot of money, who knows? Will they fix the floodlights? Don't hold your breath!

Both parties will meet on February 9th to discuss club matters.

Swat Cats target Port player

TLO are linking Thai Port full-back Wisarut Wai-Ngan (pictured below) with a move to Nakhon Ratchasima FC. The 20-year-old right back arrived at PAT Stadium from Osotspa Saraburi in July 2011, and has made 15 appearances for the club, including a brief cameo in yesterday's Toyota League Cup Final.

The Swat Cats recently won promotion to Division One via the regional league play-offs and have already begun recruiting for next season. Amongst others, they've snapped up Tehwa Sritammanusarn, Kittipoom Paphunga and Suphachai Pupha from BEC Tero. Moudourou Swa-Moise is also said to be on their radar.
